Unsaved Group Contacts

How to Extract WhatsApp Group Contacts Without Saving Every Number

·Updated · 6 min read

You do not need to save every group member to your phone before exporting a contact list. With WAExport, select a group, choose All Members or Unsaved Numbers Only, and download Excel, CSV, or VCF. Saving those contacts to your phone is a separate, optional step.

This guide shows how to extract whatsapp group contacts and check that the file contains the people you intended to include. In the real comparison below, the full export contains 76 unique numbers. Excluding saved contacts leaves 74, removing exactly the 2 saved contacts.

1. Decide which contacts you need

Choose the scope before downloading:

Your taskExport scopeUseful format
Keep a list of the selected group's membersAll MembersExcel or CSV
Get numbers not already saved as your contactsUnsaved Numbers OnlyExcel or CSV
Add the selected contacts to your phone laterEither scope, depending on your needsVCF

Unsaved describes the contact status for the WhatsApp account you are using. It does not mean someone just joined the group, has never messaged you, or is a new customer.

For a comparison, use the same WhatsApp account and the same group. Keep Exclude Admins unchanged between exports. Changing that option at the same time introduces another reason for the counts to differ.

2. Export the group without adding members to your address book

  1. Open WhatsApp Web on your computer with WAExport installed and signed into the intended WhatsApp account.
  2. Open WAExport and choose Excel. It is the easiest format for checking columns and comparing records.
  3. Select the group you want to export, rather than leaving All Groups selected.
  4. Choose All Members, export, and keep this file as your reference.
  5. Switch only the scope to Unsaved Numbers Only, then export again. Give the files distinct names, such as group-all.xlsx and group-unsaved.xlsx.

If you only need unsaved numbers, you can select that scope directly. The two-file exercise is useful when you first extract whatsapp group contacts and want to verify what the filter removes. These comparison files should be produced close together, before membership or saved-contact status changes.

3. A real comparison: 76 numbers become 74

The following totals come from two supplied exports of the same group. Only aggregate results are shown; personal details are omitted.

CheckFull exportExclude saved contacts
Member records, excluding the header7674
Unique Phone Number values7674
Is My Contact = True20
Is My Contact = False7474
Blank Saved Name values7474

Matching the files by Phone Number showed that all 74 numbers in the filtered file were present in the full file. Their nine exported fields were unchanged. There were no new numbers, and both removed records had Is My Contact = True.

So the difference is 76 - 2 = 74, not a failed export or a deduplication operation. Neither file contained duplicate phone numbers. This is the result for this group and account, not a fixed reduction to expect from every group.

4. Check your own export in Excel

Keep the original files and work on copies. The export has nine columns: Country Code, Country, Phone Number, Public Display Name, Saved Name, Group Name, Is My Contact, Is Business, and Is Blocked.

For this task, concentrate on four:

ColumnWhat to check
Phone NumberMatch records between the two files using the number, not a person's name.
Group NameConfirm that you exported the intended group.
Is My ContactTrue identifies a saved contact; False identifies an unsaved one in this export.
Saved NameA saved contact label, not a reliable substitute for the contact-status field.

In the full-export copy, select the header row and enable Data > Filter. Filter Is My Contact to False. In our comparison, that leaves the same 74 records as the separate unsaved export.

For an additional row-by-row check, copy the unsaved sheet into your working workbook and name it Unsaved. With the original column order, Phone Number is column C. In an empty column of the full-export sheet, enter =COUNTIF(Unsaved!C:C,C2) and fill down. A result of 1 means that number appears once in the unsaved file; 0 means it is absent. Here, 74 rows return 1 and the 2 saved contacts return 0. Excel's function names and separators can differ by language.

Keep phone numbers as text in both sheets. For CSV, use Data > From Text/CSV and set the phone-number column to Text before loading, rather than opening the file by double-clicking. Changing the format afterward will not restore digits already altered during import.

All 74 unsaved records in this sample have blank Saved Name cells, but use Is My Contact for filtering. Public Display Name is a different field and is not proof that you saved someone. If your totals differ, first check the selected group, account, admin filter, contact status, and timing of the exports.

5. Optional: import the contacts into your phone

If a spreadsheet is all you need, stop here. To add the selected numbers to your address book, return to WAExport, retain the intended group and scope, and choose VCard. There is no need to convert an Excel file first.

WAExport VCF export → transfer the file to your phone → confirm contact import.

Android

Transfer the file to your phone, for example as an email attachment, and download it. In Google Contacts, open Organize > Import from file, choose the destination account if asked, and select the .vcf file. Other Android contacts apps may use different menu names.

iPhone

Send the .vcf file to yourself as an email or message attachment. Open the attachment on your iPhone and follow the contact-addition prompts. Check the contacts preview before confirming; the exact labels depend on the app and iOS version.

After importing, check a few numbers in the Contacts app. Avoid importing the same file repeatedly, which can create duplicates. Importing does not activate a WAExport plan or send messages to the contacts.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to save the numbers before exporting them?

No. Exporting creates a file; importing a VCF into your address book is optional. You can finish with just Excel or CSV.

Does Unsaved Numbers Only find newly joined members?

No. It filters by saved-contact status, not join date. A long-standing member can still be unsaved.

Why did two numbers disappear in this comparison?

Those two records were marked Is My Contact = True. Every unsaved record remained unchanged in the filtered export.

Will importing the VCF make the next export smaller?

It can, if WhatsApp subsequently recognizes those imported numbers as saved contacts for the account being used. Do not assume the change is immediate; check contact status before comparing another export.

Get the list you actually need

Use WAExport to extract whatsapp group contacts, choose the appropriate scope, and verify the resulting file before using it. Keep a spreadsheet for review, and import VCF only when you want the numbers in your phone's address book. Use the contact list only for purposes you are authorized to carry out.
